Lake mburo national park is one of the smallest parks of Uganda covering an area of 370 square kilometers conveniently placed along the way on the route that connects Kampala to the western parts of Uganda, it is situated in Lyantonde district approximately 4 hours’ drive from the city, harboring a number of mammal species like zebras, impala, buffaloes, topis, elands and home to more than 300 species of birds, the park is rich with habitats comprising of bush thickets, rocky out crops, open and wooded savannah, forests, swamps, lakes and rivers
Lake mburo national park offers great experiences, it is the only park to do a safe horseback riding, it is one of the most interesting activities that would make you feel like you are part of the nature as you ride close to the wild animals, it is an initiative of Mihingo safari lodge to offer this activity for travelers that come and wish to engage in nature, the lodge is a luxurious family lodge sitting opposite lake mburo, initially they used to do horseback riding outside the park however they were allowed to conduct even inside the ecosystem, horseback safari gives you a chance to see a mixture of wild animals including primates like baboons and vervet monkeys.
The lodge runs the horseback riding with seven horses and a maximum of six participants is allowed to participate, they advise for beginners to take a walk, experienced ridders can take 4to 5 hours in the field to the middle of the national park, maximum weight of carriage by the horse is 85 kilo grams, its recommendable to wear long sleeved shirts and trousers, a little raised shoes as well, The most interesting thing is whether a learner or an expert you will enjoy the ride around the national park, Horseback riding is conducted by well experienced staff who adjust speed according to the ridders ability, it gives you chance to get off the usual tracks of wildlife, animals would feel much more comfortable around a horse as compared to safari van.
Lake mburo national park lies at an altitude of 1220m above sea level, underlined by ancient metamorphic rocks dated back to more than 500 million years ago, the parks soil component is clay and basically no underwater although it is surrounded by lakes, rivers, seasonal and permanent swamps. The 370 kilometer park is home to the endangered Rothschild’s giraffe that was introduced to the national park in 2015, it also known as the Uganda giraffe it is exciting to meet them on a horse ride.
The park can be accessed all year round, best during Uganda’s dry seasons, the horseback riding is arranged based on weather however it’s a tropical country so rain is anticipated any time, the park experiences a mild climate with afavourbale weather conditions mostly accompanied with regular temperatures.
